Common Terms To Understand When Window Shopping

Window Sash

The window sash is the unit that slides open and closed. A double hung window has two moveable sashes (upper and lower) while a single hung window has one moveable sash (lower).

Double Hung Windows

Windows with two moveable sashes and a horizontal divider.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are those that use a crank handle to open and have no horizontal divider in the middle.

Sliding Windows

Have a similar look to casement windows since they have no horizontal divider. A cost effective way to get the look of casements without the added cost. They slide open horizontally as opposed to vertically like a regular double hung window. Please note these are not simply double hung windows mounted sideways. The mechanism is different which is built specifically for it to slide horizontally.

Replacement Windows

Replacement windows are installed in the existing framework of your existing windows. The old sashes are removed and a complete window assembly is installed in their place.

New Construction Windows

New construction windows are a complete unit that come with a nailing flange that allows the window to be installed by nailing it into the plywood wall sheathing of the home from the outside. This is what is normally used in current home builds.

Grids

Aesthetic dividers within the glass. Windows can be ordered with grids on both sashes or just one.

Low E Glass

A reflective coating on the glass that reflects heat waves off the glass and outward in the summer and reflects heat from the inside of the house back inward in the winter.

Argon Gas

This gas is used to fill the space between window panes. Its purpose is to increase the R- value of the window and offer increased sound deadening.

Knowing these components and styles of windows will help you out when making decisions for planning your window project. Another thing to know is that window prices can vary widely among companies.
